A financial services group and one of Africa's largest, FirstRand runs well-known South African brands: First National Bank for everyday banking, Rand Merchant Bank for corporate and investment banking, and WesBank for vehicle finance. Born in 1998 from a merger of Anglo American and RMB Holdings' financial interests, its name blends "First" from FNB with "Rand," the South African currency. Its roots trace to 1977, when three entrepreneurs nicknamed the "three musketeers" started a small investment firm.
