A Japanese tech conglomerate often called the "Amazon of Japan," Rakuten runs the vast Rakuten Ichiba online marketplace where small merchants set up their own storefronts, alongside digital services like the Kobo e-reader, Viber messaging, banking, credit cards, and its own mobile network. It began in 1997 when founder Hiroshi Mikitani, a former investment banker, left finance after the Great Hanshin Earthquake to help revive Japan's economy, naming the company "Rakuten" — Japanese for "optimism" — and launching with just a handful of employees and merchants.
