A biotechnology company that turned the body's own red blood cells into living medicines. Rubius genetically engineered human red blood cells to carry therapeutic proteins and enzymes, aiming to treat cancer and autoimmune diseases as ready-made "off-the-shelf" treatments. It was founded in 2013 by the innovation lab Flagship Pioneering, with co-founders from MIT and the Whitehead Institute. The name comes from the Latin rubeus, meaning "red" — the same root as the word "ruby" — a nod to the very cells at the heart of its science.
