Line Corporation
A Japanese technology firm best known for LINE, the messaging app that most of the country uses every day to chat and swap stickers. LINE was built by engineers in 2011 as a way for colleagues to stay in touch when phone networks failed during the massive earthquake and tsunami, then released to the public the same year. Its name nods to keeping a "line" of communication open during that crisis, and the app's expressive stickers became a cultural staple of everyday Japanese texting.
