A closed-end investment fund that pools money to buy a portfolio of municipal bonds — the tax-exempt debt issued by cities and states to build things like schools, roads, and hospitals — aiming to hand shareholders income free of federal income tax. It trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker DSM and was founded in 1989. Its name comes from BNY Mellon, born of a 2007 merger between two historic banks — one of them, the Bank of New York, was founded in 1784 with help from Alexander Hamilton and became the first company ever listed on the NYSE.
