Founded in 1937 in Wolfsburg, the company was created to build an affordable "people's car" — the name Volkswagen literally means "the people's car" — and its first model, the Beetle, became one of the best-selling cars in history. The company's headquarters still sits in Wolfsburg, where its main factory is one of the largest car plants on the planet.
