A biotechnology company that raises genetically engineered Atlantic salmon in land-based farms. Its main product, the AquAdvantage Salmon, was the first genetically engineered animal approved for human consumption in the United States. Founded in 1991 as A/F Protein, Inc., the company began by studying antifreeze proteins before licensing a gene construct from university researchers to build its fast-growing fish. The name "AquAdvantage" blends "aquaculture" and "advantage."
