A German maker of industrial metal 3D printers, SLM Solutions builds machines that fuse metal powder with lasers, layer by layer, into solid parts for aerospace, automotive, and medical customers. Founded in 2006 in Lübeck, the company grew out of laser research at the Fraunhofer Institute, and its name is simply the acronym for that process — selective laser melting. A fun twist: once a takeover target of GE, it was later bought by camera giant Nikon in 2023.
