Phi, Inc.

A helicopter services company that flies people and cargo for the offshore oil and gas industry, and runs PHI Air Medical, one of the largest air-ambulance fleets in the US carrying patients from accident scenes and between hospitals. It was founded in 1949 in Lafayette, Louisiana, as Petroleum Bell Helicopters to ferry seismic crews across the marshy swamps where ground travel was slow and dangerous. Its initials once spelled out Petroleum Helicopters, Inc., and the company even pioneered offshore refueling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico as it grew with the oil boom.
