Foresight Energy LP
A coal producer headquartered in St. Louis that mines high-heat thermal coal from underground complexes across the Illinois Basin, using longwall mining to supply electric utilities and industrial customers at home and abroad. Coal entrepreneur Chris Cline founded the company in 2006, betting that pollution-control scrubbers would revive demand for the region's high-sulfur coal — a wager that gave the firm its name, a nod to his "foresight." Its Sugar Camp complex in southern Illinois ranks among the largest coal operations in the United States.
