iShares Trust
A family of exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, run by the investment manager BlackRock. Each iShares fund bundles a basket of stocks, bonds, or other assets that mirrors a market index like the S&P 500, letting everyday investors buy a whole market slice as easily as a single stock. The brand began in 1996 as WEBS (World Equity Benchmark Shares) under Barclays Global Investors, was renamed iShares in 2000—the "i" standing for "index"—and came to BlackRock in 2009 when BlackRock bought Barclays' fund business.
