Ellie Mae, Inc.

A maker of software for the home-loan business, Ellie Mae built Encompass, the cloud-based platform that mortgage lenders, brokers, and banks use to originate, underwrite, and close residential loans from start to finish. Founded in 1997 by Limin Hu and Sigmund Anderman, it was originally called Electronic Mortgage Affiliates—a name whose initials, E.M.A., morphed into the friendlier "Ellie Mae," a nod to mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The company grew out of Pleasanton, California, and in 2020 was folded into Intercontinental Exchange, which still runs Encompass today.
