Walter Energy, Inc.

A coal mining company that produced metallurgical (coking) coal for steelmakers, running deep underground mines in Alabama as well as operations in West Virginia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It began in 1946 as Jim Walter Homes, the post-war homebuilder that sold "shell" houses—watertight exteriors buyers finished themselves—before rebranding as Walter Energy in 2009. The company took its name from founder James W. Walter Sr.
