A maker of window blinds, shades, and shutters sold under brands like Duette honeycomb shades and Luminette privacy sheers, used by homeowners and designers to control light and insulate rooms. It grew from a 1946 partnership between Henry Sonnenberg, who had moved a machinery business from Germany to America, and Californian fabricator Joe Hunter, who together invented lightweight aluminum Venetian blinds. One quirk: unhappy putting his own name on the venture, Sonnenberg picked "Douglas" from a phone book, pairing it with partner Hunter's name.
