National Grid Plc
One of the world's largest utility companies, National Grid owns and runs the high-voltage electricity transmission networks of England and Wales, plus power and gas networks across the northeastern United States. It was formed in 1990 when Britain privatized its state-run electricity industry. The name comes from the "national gridiron"—the crisscrossing pattern of the country's first synchronized transmission lines, completed in the 1930s.
