China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation

One of the world's largest oil refiners and chemical makers, Sinopec turns crude oil into the gasoline and diesel that power Chinese vehicles, plus petrochemicals like synthetic resins and plastics used in everyday goods. It was created in 1998 when China restructured its petroleum industry, and the listed company followed in 2000. The name is a clever mash-up: "Sino" for Chinese plus "petroleum and chemical," so "Sinopec" literally means "China's petroleum and chemical company."
