Ishares, Inc.
A maker of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that lets everyday and institutional investors buy a whole basket of stocks, bonds, or commodities in one trade, managed by the giant asset manager BlackRock. It began in 1996 as WEBS (World Equity Benchmark Shares) before Barclays rebranded it iShares in 2000, and BlackRock bought the business in 2009. The "i" doesn't stand for anything — it just rode the late-1990s trend of slapping an "i" on products to make them feel modern and internet-friendly.
