The world's largest producer of wood pellets, Enviva turns low-value wood — thinning trees, tops, and limbs that sawmills reject — into dense biomass fuel burned by power plants in the UK, Europe, and Japan. Founded in 2004 and based in Bethesda, Maryland, the company squeezes wood fiber under high pressure so heat releases lignin, a natural adhesive that holds each pellet together with no added chemicals. Its name is thought to blend "environment" and the Latin word for living.
