A special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), or blank-check company, created to raise money from public investors and later merge it into an operating business. Formed by a team tied to the insurance industry, Insurance Acquisition Corp. went public in 2019 and used its funds to take Shift Technologies, an online used-car marketplace, public in 2020. Its name reflected the insurance background of the sponsors who launched it.
