A provider of automated retirement-planning advice, Financial Engines helps people manage their workplace 401(k) accounts. It was co-founded in 1996 by Nobel-winning economist William F. Sharpe and former SEC commissioner Joseph Grundfest, who built computer models to give everyday savers the kind of guidance once reserved for the wealthy. The name nods to those "financial engines" — the software that powers the advice.
