Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc.

A maker of the typefaces behind everyday reading, Monotype owns the rights to famous fonts like Helvetica, Arial, Gotham, and Times New Roman, and licenses them to brands, designers, and publishers. It traces its roots to Tolbert Lanston's 1887 invention of a mechanical typesetting machine in Philadelphia that cast letters one at a time—the "mono type"—which made the machine's name. That odd naming choice also set it apart from rival Linotype, which cast a whole line of metal type at once.
