Nps Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

A biopharmaceutical firm that made medicines for rare diseases, most notably Gattex, a therapy for short bowel syndrome (a condition in which the gut cannot absorb enough nutrients), and Natpara, a hormone replacement for people with underactive parathyroid glands. It began in Utah as Natural Products Sciences, built on research from the University of Utah Medical School, and its "NPS" initials still recall that original name. Drugmaker Shire bought the company in 2015, folding its treatments into a broader rare-disease portfolio.
