Warner Chilcott Plc
A specialty pharmaceutical maker focused on women's health and dermatology, known for brands like the oral contraceptives Loestrin and Ovcon and the ulcerative-colitis drug Asacol. It began in 1968 when Northern Irish pharmacist Allen McClay founded a firm named Galen after the ancient Greco-Roman physician Claudius Galenus; in 2000 Galen bought a Dublin rival also called Warner Chilcott and later took that name. The fun bit: the name honors a physician who lived nearly two thousand years ago.
