A maker of nitrogen fertilizer, CF Industries produces ammonia, urea, and urea ammonium nitrate that farmers use to grow staple crops like corn and wheat. It began in 1946 as Central Farmers Fertilizer Company, a cooperative owned by regional farm groups — the "CF" stands for Central Farmers. One of the world's largest nitrogen producers, it runs plants across North America and the UK, and became a public company in 2005 after decades as a farmer-owned cooperative.
