Based in Jackson, Michigan, CMS Energy is a utility holding company whose main subsidiary, Consumers Energy, supplies electricity and natural gas to millions of homes and businesses across Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Its roots reach back to 1886, when flour miller William Foote, fascinated by a generator he'd installed in his own mill, helped found the Jackson Electric Light Works. The young company grew by buying local electric, gas, and trolley companies—including some running mule-drawn streetcars.
