Barclays Bank Plc
A British bank that serves everyday savers, businesses, and large institutions around the world, offering everything from current accounts and mortgages to credit cards under the Barclaycard name and investment banking. It began in 1690 in London, when two Quaker goldsmiths, John Freame and Thomas Gould, started taking deposits on Lombard Street; the Barclay name arrived when Freame's son-in-law James Barclay joined the firm in 1736. In 1967 it unveiled the world's first cash machine at its Enfield branch, and its founder reportedly dreamed up the idea while sitting in his bath.
