A biotechnology company that makes genomic medicines using zinc finger proteins—natural human proteins engineered to bind specific DNA sequences, enabling gene therapy and genome editing for serious diseases. Founded in 1995 by Edward Lanphier, its name was inspired by the Sangamon River in Illinois, borrowed from the earlier Sangamo Electric Company that Lanphier's relatives helped found a century earlier.
