Asterias Biotherapeutics, Inc.
A biotech firm that turned human embryonic stem cells into therapies for repairing damaged nerves, most famously a treatment for spinal cord injuries. It was born in 2012 as BioTime Acquisition Corporation, a vehicle set up by BioTime to buy stem-cell programs from Geron, and renamed itself Asterias in 2013. The name comes from the starfish genus Asterias — a fitting nod to a creature famous for regrowing its own limbs.
