An IT company that helps big businesses speed up and see into their networks. Its SteelHead appliances accelerate applications over sluggish wide-area connections, while SteelCentral watches network and application performance for the IT teams that keep remote workforces running. Founded in 2002 and originally called NBT, short for "Next Big Thing," it was renamed Riverbed in 2003. The name is a metaphor: streams of IT data gather in one riverbed, where companies "mine for gold" — the hard-to-find insights buried in the flood.
