Protalix Biotherapeutics, Inc.
A biopharmaceutical company based in Israel, Protalix makes medicines for rare diseases by growing therapeutic proteins in plant cells. Its signature product, Elelyso, treats Gaucher disease and was the first plant-cell-made protein the FDA ever approved, developed with Pfizer. Founded in 1993 by a plant biochemist, the company grows engineered carrot cells as living bioreactors instead of animal cells.
