Acme Packet, Inc.

A maker of the network "gatekeepers" that keep internet phone and video calls secure and working as they cross between different networks. Founded in 2000 in Bedford, Massachusetts, Acme Packet built its flagship Net-Net line of session border controllers, devices that smooth and protect real-time voice and video traffic over IP networks. Its founders picked the name "Acme" (from the Greek for "summit") in part so the company would appear near the top of alphabetical phone directories, and Oracle bought the firm in 2013, folding its technology into its communications portfolio.
