Alterra Capital Holdings Limited

A Bermuda-based international insurance and reinsurance company that underwrites property and casualty coverage for businesses in dozens of countries. It was born in 2010 from a 'merger of equals' between Max Capital Group and Harbor Point, and its name comes from a Latin term meaning 'high ground.' In 2013 the company was acquired by the U.S. insurer Markel, ending its run as an independent specialty firm.
