A Kansas City energy company that for years ranked among the largest propane retailers in America, delivering heating fuel to hundreds of thousands of homes, farms and businesses across dozens of states while also running natural-gas storage sites. Founder John Sherman built it after selling his earlier propane venture to Dynegy, then grew Inergy by buying up nearly ninety regional distributors. Its name blends "in" and "energy"—and Sherman later bought the Kansas City Royals.
