The name comes from Coffeyville Resources, the firm formed in 2000 to buy the Coffeyville, Kansas, refinery — a facility built in 1906 that locals long nicknamed the "COOP" refinery after its cooperative-era owners. The Wynnewood, Oklahoma, plant dates back to 1923 and passed through several owners before CVR Energy took the refiner public in 2013.
