Steinway Musical Instruments, Inc.
A maker of handcrafted grand and upright pianos, Steinway & Sons builds instruments used by concert halls, conservatories, and celebrated musicians around the globe. German immigrant Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg founded the company in 1853 in a Manhattan loft, Americanizing his name to Henry E. Steinway. During World War II it parachuted roughly three thousand rugged "Victory Vertical" upright pianos to American soldiers overseas to keep morale up—a favorite piece of company lore. Its pianos are still built by hand at factories in Queens, New York, and Hamburg, Germany.
