One of the world's largest software companies for running and securing big computer systems, especially mainframes, it began in 1976 as a New York startup by Charles Wang and Russell Artzt — the U.S. branch of a Swiss software firm called Computer Associates. The founders paid for the early days with personal credit cards, and the first product was CA-SORT, a data-sorting utility for IBM mainframes. The name stuck after the Swiss parent was bought out, and Broadcom bought the company in 2018.
