Associated Estates Realty Corporation

A builder, owner, and manager of apartment communities across the United States, Associated Estates Realty Corporation ran multifamily housing as a real estate investment trust. It began in 1964 as the Associated Estates Group, a family-run business in Cleveland, Ohio, founded by Carl Milstein — the name nodding to its role in putting up residential apartment "estates" in the region. The company stayed family-owned for decades, went public in 1993, expanded nationwide after a 1998 acquisition, and was bought by a fund managed by Brookfield Asset Management in 2015.
