ARM Holdings plc

A designer of the chip blueprints that power most of the world's smartphones, ARM doesn't build chips itself — it licenses its designs to Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm, and many others. It began in 1990 as a joint venture spun off from British computer maker Acorn, with Apple and VLSI Technology, and its name ARM originally stood for "Acorn RISC Machine." The chip was born in the 1980s at Acorn, designed by engineers Sophie Wilson and Steve Furber.
