Computer Modelling Group Ltd.

A Calgary-based software company whose reservoir-simulation programs (IMEX, GEM, and STARS) let oil and gas engineers model what happens underground—where oil sits, how it flows, and how to recover it—before drilling a single well. Founded in 1978 by University of Calgary professor Khalid Aziz, it began as a non-profit research group backed by an Alberta government grant and stayed that way for 19 years before going public. Fun fact: its name is literally just a description of what it does—a group that makes computer models—and it got its start tackling the tricky challenge of heavy oil and tar sands.
