David Katz

David A. Katz is President and Chief Investment Officer of Matrix Asset Advisors, a small-cap value firm based in White Plains, New York. He graduated summa cum laude from Union College in 1984 with an economics degree and later earned an MBA from New York University's Graduate School of Business. Early in his career he worked at Management Asset Corporation in Westport, Connecticut, where he learned the trade before setting out on his own. In 1986 Katz co-founded Value Matrix Management with the late John M. Gates; the firm merged into Matrix Asset Advisors in 1990. Since the start he has led the firm's Investment Policy Committee, and the firm remains 100% employee-owned, keeping the same core team of investment professionals for more than three decades. Matrix invests through the lens of Benjamin Graham and David Dodd, hunting for financially solid companies that trade well below what an astute buyer would pay for the whole business. Katz calls the firm "opportunistic value investors," willing to go anywhere for value rather than limiting themselves to the cheapest stocks, and he leans on balance sheets and earnings calls to find overlooked small caps. He runs a concentrated, high-conviction portfolio and holds for the long term rather than pushing companies to change. A regular guest on CNBC and Bloomberg Radio, Katz returned to his alma mater to teach as an adjunct professor at Union College in 2024.
