Mohnish Pabrai

Mohnish Pabrai is the founder and managing partner of Pabrai Investment Funds, a family of investment partnerships he set up in 1999 in deliberate imitation of Warren Buffett's original 1950s-era partnerships. Pabrai grew up in India, trained as a computer engineer at Clemson University, and spent his early career at the telecom firm Tellabs before striking out on his own in 1991. He founded TransTech, Inc., an IT consulting and systems-integration company, with little more than money drawn from his 401(k) and credit cards, and sold the business to Kurt Salmon Associates in 2000. Pabrai has described his investing as "cloned" — he studies the public filings and moves of Buffett, Charlie Munger, and a handful of other value investors, then applies their reasoning to his own ideas. He runs a concentrated portfolio of undervalued, capital-light businesses with durable competitive advantages and large margins of safety, and he holds for the long term rather than agitating for change at the companies he owns. He is also the author of "The Dhandho Investor" and the founder of the Dakshana Foundation, which funds intensive tutoring for underprivileged students in India. The story that sealed his reputation came in 2007, when Pabrai and fellow investor Guy Spier placed a joint winning bid of $650,100 at an eBay charity auction for lunch with Warren Buffett, a price that made the meal the most expensive of its kind at the time.
