Yongping Duan
Yongping Duan is a Chinese-American investor who runs H&H International Investment, an international firm based in Palo Alto, California. Trained as an engineer, he earned a degree in wireless electronics engineering from Zhejiang University in 1978 and later a master's in econometrics. Before turning to investing full-time he built consumer electronics businesses, founding BBK Electronics in 1995, the company behind smartphone brands including OPPO, vivo, OnePlus, and Realme. In 2001, at age forty, Duan moved to California to focus on investments and philanthropy, and in November 2017 he established H&H International Investment as his private investment vehicle. Duan invests in the concentrated, long-horizon style he learned from Warren Buffett, holding a small number of high-conviction positions in companies with strong, understandable business models. He avoids leverage and favors patient ownership over trading. One early bet made his name: a position in the Chinese internet company NetEase that returned about fifty times his money, a retellable vindication of his approach. He has also mentored Colin Huang, the founder of Pinduoduo, and set up philanthropic efforts including the H&H Evergreen Foundation. Duan is often called the "Chinese Warren Buffett," a nickname he earned partly by doing something no one from mainland China had done before. In 2006 he bid $620,100 at a charity auction for a private lunch with Buffett, becoming the first Chinese investor to win the honor. He has said he wanted to thank Buffett for the investment philosophy that shaped his own career.
