A maker of ceramic materials for the oil and gas and industrial markets, Carbo Ceramics produces proppants — tiny, strong ceramic spheres used in hydraulic fracturing to hold cracks open so oil and gas can flow — plus related environmental products and containment technologies. The Houston company was founded in 1987, and its name comes from the Latin root "carbo," meaning carbon or charcoal. Its beads are engineered to be so uniform in size and roundness that under a microscope they look like tiny man-made ping-pong balls.
