Formed in 1925 when two California tractor rivals, Holt Manufacturing and C.L. Best Tractor, merged, the company's name dates to 1904, when a photographer watching Benjamin Holt's new track-type tractor crawl across a muddy field reportedly said it looked like a monster caterpillar.
