A grower and distributor of bananas and other fresh fruit sold under the familiar Chiquita brand, recognizable by its little blue sticker on bananas in grocery stores around the world. It began in the late 1800s when a sea captain shipped a load of bananas from Jamaica, growing through the Boston Fruit Company and later the United Fruit Company. The name Chiquita—Spanish for "little girl"—comes from Miss Chiquita, the fruit-hatted mascot created in 1944 and inspired by performer Carmen Miranda; the company adopted it in 1984.
