A biotech firm that built the GeneChip DNA microarray, letting scientists study thousands of genes at once on a small chip for research, diagnostics, and drug development. It began as a group at Affymax led by Stephen Fodor, which borrowed semiconductor photolithography to "print" DNA probes onto glass, then spun off in 1992. Its name blends "affinity" and "metrix" (for measuring), and it was later folded into Thermo Fisher Scientific.
