A maker of rocket engines and propulsion systems for spaceflight and defense, Aerojet Rocketdyne's engines have powered everything from the Saturn V moon rockets to the Space Shuttle. The company traces its roots to 1942, when Caltech scientists including Theodore von Kármán founded Aerojet to build jet-assisted takeoff rockets for World War II aircraft. In 2013, Aerojet merged with Rocketdyne, the engine maker behind the mighty F-1 engines that carried Apollo astronauts to the Moon.
