Sycamore Networks, Inc.
A maker of optical networking gear, Sycamore Networks built switches and management systems that telephone carriers used to move internet traffic over fiber optic lines. Founded in 1998 by the entrepreneurs behind Cascade Communications, the company got its name when an executive mistook a pair of maple trees outside the office for sycamores — co-founder Desh Deshpande later joked it could have been called "Maple Networks."
