Credit Suisse Group AG
One of the world's largest banks for over a century and a half, Credit Suisse served wealthy individuals, corporations, and governments through wealth management, investment banking, and everyday Swiss retail banking. It was founded in Zurich in 1856 by Alfred Escher, a powerful politician and rail enthusiast, under the name Schweizerische Kreditanstalt, expressly to bankroll Switzerland's booming railway network and industrialization. That railway focus lives on in a fun detail: Escher also championed the Gotthard tunnel, so Switzerland's first great bank was essentially born out of a passion for trains. In 2023 the bank was absorbed by its longtime rival UBS.
