A Canadian gold miner that digs for gold at mines like LaRonde, Detour Lake, and Fosterville across Canada, Australia, and Finland, selling the metal for jewelry, coins, and electronics. It began in the silver-mining town of Cobalt, Ontario, and took the name "Agnico" in 1957 from the chemical symbols of the metals it then produced—Ag for silver, Ni for nickel, and Co for cobalt—before merging with Eagle Gold Mines in 1972 to become Agnico Eagle. Today it ranks as one of the world's largest gold producers.
